The challenge of the study of transient phenomena in space is to know when and where to look, or how to catch new events early to observe as much of the phenomena as possible. Major experiments have been deployed to realize full surveys of the sky by increasing the cadence and sensitivity of the observations. Observing from the ground has however complications like weather conditions. To mitigate these issues, a constellation of small telescopes can be brought to space to perform a full survey of the sky at high cadence with limited sensitivity. The research activities will be focused on the following topics: 1. Use case analysis and requirements definition. This work will focus on exoplanet detection based on the transit technique, i.e., when a planet passes in front of its star, the star appears to dim, as some of its light is blocked by the planet. We are offering a research internship (4 months, with the possibility of a part-time contract) to analyse the benefits that improved representation of biomass burning emissions has on the predictive skill of the ECMWF seasonal forecast system, paying special attention to the most important wild fires events that occurred in the last decade. This position will be jointly hosted by the Climate Variability and Change Group within BSC’s Earth Science Department. The successful candidate will analyse three sets of retrospective seasonal predictions performed with different implementations of the forcing due to biomass burning emissions, and apply tailored statistical techniques to determine the predictive skill of each system, and identify the improvements enabled by the most realistic forcing implementation. Twice a year the European Economic and Social Committee offers traineeships for a period of five months to university graduates. These periods of in-service training offer an opportunity to learn about the EESC's roles and activities and to acquire professional experience in a multicultural environment. They begin on 16 February and 16 September of each year and take place in the Committee's offices in Brussels. For a brief description of the EESC's organisation chart and tasks typically carried out by trainees, please consult the downloads. Long-term trainees are given a monthly grant in accordance with the provisions regarding traineeships at the EESC.
