S-Tron Shanghai 2024 Pitch Competition

S-Tron China (S创中国) is a global entrepreneurship community which was upgraded from Slush China in 2022.

Since 2015, Slush China has successfully held more than 10 international innovation conferences in some big cities, including Beijing, Shanghai, Shenzhen、Nanjing、Yangzhou、Xiamen, attracting 35,000+ high-tech talents, 3,000+ volunteers, 4,000+ startups and 500+ speakers from home and abroad, and successfully matching 2,000+ technology projects with investment institutions and large enterprises. Project/objectives description:

The upcoming S-Tron Shanghai 2024 Pitch Competition focuses on 6 tracks, including 12 sub tracks. Each track will have 6 startups to pitch offline. The pitch startups will showcase to more than 1500 global investors and over 12,000 professional attendees, obtain resource matchmaking and brand promotion, and strive for the championship honor!

Traineeships at European Economic and Social Committee EESC

The European Economic and Social Committee (EESC) is an advisory body that gives Europe's economic and social partners (i.e. employers, trade unions, representatives of small businesses, farmers' associations, consumers, etc.) the chance to issue their formal opinion on EU policies. 

Twice a year the EESC organises in-service training periods of long (five months) and short duration (one to three months).

The main aims of the in-service training are:

La Universitat de Barcelona, la Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, la Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya, la Universitat Pompeu Fabra i la Universitat de Girona organitzen el Programa «De la ciència al mercat» per fomentar la transferència de tecnologia i coneixement.

Research Engineer on aerosols forecast products (RE1/RE2) per el Barcelona Supercomputing Center

We are looking for an enthusiast research engineer to join the Atmospheric Composition (AC) group within the Earth Sciences department at the BSC-CNS. The AC group is currently composed of about 40 people among researchers, engineers and students of different nationalities. It aims at better understanding and predicting the spatiotemporal variations of atmospheric pollutants along with their effects upon air quality, weather and climate. This is addressed through the continuous development and application of numerical models over multiple scales, from weather to climate and from global to urban scales.

The BSC hosts the Barcelona Dust Regional Center, which provide forecasts of mineral dusts over Northern Africa, Middle East and Europe with an ensemble of state-of-the-art numerical models. The AC group also develops and maintains its own forecast model MONARCH, which is a coupled meteorological-chemistry model that can be run at global and regional scales to simulate gaseous chemistry and aerosols plus their feedbacks on radiation. With MONARCH a larger number of aerosols products tailored for aviation, solar energy and air-quality are provided on a daily base.

In the framework of a newly funded European project (ATARI), the AC group will provide training and know-how on dust modelling, assimilation and forecast products to early stage researchers and students from different countries. The successful candidate will work along with BSC researchers, atmospheric modelling and data management experts to deliver high quality training, covering multiple aspects from the evaluation of forecast products to the exploitation of tailored aerosols products for different applications.

• Prepare hands-on training sessions based on forecast and observational data
• Contribute to workshops and summer schools training sessions
• Write documentation, user guides and technical reports
• Contribute to dissemination and communication activities on aerosols science

We seek a passionate and talented Climate Modelling specialist to join our Natural and Social Hazards (NaSH) group. In this role, you’ll have the chance to work in a multidisciplinary team that aims to develop methodologies and products related to risk maps as well as early warning products, with a strong focus on solving real-world problems. Traineeships at the CoR

Each year, the Committee of the Regions (CoR) provides a limited number of Cicero internships offering the opportunity to acquire work experience in a European institution.

Three types of internships are available: Standard Traineeship, Short-term study visits and Traineeship for Government Officials:

1.Standard traineeship

5-month traineeships for young graduates, running from 16 February until 15 July (Spring traineeships) or from 16 September to 15 February (Autumn traineeships).

Trainees are selected from nationals of the EU Member States. However a limited number of citizens from third countries (including the UK) may be accepted.

Project/objectives description: The challenge aims to identify innovative digital solutions to improve shipyard operations through the optimization of production processes, remote tracking and connectivity, aiming at reducing time and costs and increasing final quality. 

Remote Assistance: innovative solutions that support the problem-solving process in production and post-sales assistance. These solutions will facilitate evaluations and decisions by enabling interaction between onsite and remote operators. This includes hardware and software solutions for asset monitoring. The goal is to minimize the parameters to be required allowing the monitoring of asset health and enabling timely interventions.

Advanced Vision Technologies: advanced vision technologies that enable progress tracking and production control. The goal is to detect unsafe situations, automate processes and support decision making with technologies characterized by ease and flexibility of use (e.g, LIDAR, recognition cameras, 3D scanners, advanced photogrammetry, computer vision).

Tracking: smart tracking hardware and software solutions for as-built tracking. The goal is to track processes and activities, input and output components throughout the value chain, including the product's useful life and maintenance. These solutions must be multi-hardware and may include integrations with MES (Manufactoring Execution System) and WMS (Warehouse Management System).

Logistics Optimazation: Solutions for optimizing logistics and production layouts by improving the logistical flow and asset management in the shipyard, including as-is analysis and simulations of alternative layouts.

PhD student - Electrochemical C-N coupling for sustainable synthesis. ICN2 - Institut Català de Nanociència i Nanotecnologia

The successful candidate will combine classical electrochemical methods with in situ characterisation techniques including spectroscopy, electrochemical scanning probe microscopy and electrochemical mass spectrometry to investigate the structure-property relations of electrocatalyst materials as well as the mechanism of novel electrocatalytic reactions. The reactions of interest include the electrochemical reduction of carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide and nitrate reduction into renewable fuels along with the electrochemical C-N coupling to produce value-added chemicals (e.g. sustainable fertilisers and pharmaceuticals). The candidate will develop electrochemical and in situ characterisation methods and setups for the real-time detection of intermediates and products during electrocatalytic reactions.

This PhD will be part of the "Electrochemistry. Science and Technology" interuniversity PhD programme and will be carried out in collaboration with other groups at both ICN2 and foreign research institutions. The candidate will carry out independent research under supervision, write scientific papers for publication in peer-reviewed journals, and disseminate their work in international conferences.

VA Erzberg, open-pit iron ore mine from Austria, launches the Net-Zero Iron Ore Challenge – Innovative Siderite Processing & Carbonate Valorization

VA Erzberg, Europe’s largest open-pit iron ore mine, in collaboration with EIT RawMaterials, the leading raw materials innovation and knowledge network and supported by the European Institute of Innovation & Technology (EIT), a body of the European Union (EU), launched the VA Erzberg Net-Zero Iron Ore Challenge – Innovative Siderite Processing & Carbonate Valorization. The initiative is an urgent call for startups, SMEs, research groups, universities and innovators to propose sustainable solutions for reducing CO2 emissions from carbonate iron ore processing

The iron and steel industry is a cornerstone of the European economy, supporting 2.6 million jobs and contributing €132 billion annually. As the European Union aims for carbon neutrality by 2050 and seeks to reduce its CO2 emissions by 55% by 2030, the urgent decarbonisation of the iron and steel sector is essential.

Regions like Austria, where VA Erzberg is located, have extensive mineral iron carbonate reserves. However, the traditional carbonate ore reduction process includes a calcination step, which impacts the steelmakers’ Scope 3 emissions.

The challenge invites submissions from both commercial-ready solutions and early-stage innovations that focus on three areas:

1)    Iron Ore Calcination and Reduction: Innovative eco-efficient methods for Erzberg’s iron ore calcination and reduction, improving efficiency and reducing emissions

2)   CO2 Off-Gas Treatment: Advanced technologies to capture and utilise CO2 emissions during the processes

3)    Byproduct Valorization: Innovative methods to valorise CO2 and other byproducts from Erzberg in the steel or other     industries

The winners will gain insights into advanced mining operations and receive benefits such as paid proof-of-concept opportunities, funding support for further research, as well as networking and coaching opportunities.

The challenge dedicated to the Green Transition aims to identify innovative solutions to support the energy transition of ships through the optimization of fuel consumption, new power generation systems and the energy efficiency of systems.

Optimization of fuel consumption: solutions aimed at reducing hydrodynamic resistance, assisting propulsion with alternative technologies and optimazing navigation profiles to reduce consumption, optimize fuel use and improve the ship's energy efficiency.

Energy efficiency of the ship's systems: solutions for improving the energy efficiency of ships through the optimization of onboard systems, such as desalination plants for potable water production (ballast water treatment systems), heat recovery system, waste management and steam production systems. This includes both hardware and software solutions for analysing electrical consumption.

Power generation: solutions for the storage and conversion of traditional or alternative fuels to reduce emissions. Post-doc researcher: Understanding atmospheric iron deposition in the ocean under present and future climates per el Barcelona Supercomputing Center

The Earth Sciences Department of the BSC (BSC-ES) carries out research into modelling and understanding the behavior of the Earth’s system. BSC-ES focuses on atmospheric emissions, air quality, mineral dust, climate variability and changee, global health resilience, and Earth system services for end users.

Within the BSC-ES, the Atmospheric Composition Group develops a modelling capability to combine atmospheric dynamical and chemical processes relevant at a wide range of spatial scales, and investigates their impacts on weather, air quality, climate, health and ecosystems. A core activity of the group is dust modelling and forecasting, and as a result of its excellence, the BSC-ES hosts the WMO Sand and Dust Storm Warning Advisory and Assessment System for North Africa, the Middle East and Europe, and an AXA Chair on Sand and Dust Storms. The group is also highly active in the EC Framework Programs and collaborates with the administrations on competitive projects and contracts.

Atmospheric deposition of soluble iron associated with dust and combustion aerosols influences primary productivity and carbon uptake in vast regions of the open ocean. The amount and solubility of the deposited iron depend upon its origin and chemical processing during transport. Large uncertainties remain on the absolute and relative contributions of anthropogenic and natural sources as well as the atmospheric iron dissolution mechanisms that determine the bioavailable iron supply from the atmosphere to the ocean and its impact on the carbon cycle. Better understanding these influences is fundamental in a context of changing climate and global implementation of climate-mitigation policies.

The Atmospheric Composition group from the ES-BSC is looking for a postdoctoral fellow to improve our understanding of the natural and anthropogenic contributions to the soluble iron deposition in the ocean. Part of the research will consist of further developing and constraining the atmospheric iron cycle in the EC-Earth Earth System model. Among other key novelties, the researcher will incorporate observationally constrained information on the mineralogy of dust sources by the NASA-EMIT mission and explore the role of vegetation and land-use changes on dust emission in present and future climates. The analyses and assessments will be complemented with the incorporation of state-of-the-art anthropogenic and biomass burning emissions beyond CMIP6 estimates.

The researcher will have the opportunity to follow multiple training activities, including those aimed at improving coding and data analysis, scientific and project writing abilities, or project management. All this will be implemented via the formal courses organized by the Education and Training team and Human Resources, and the participation in the regular seminars organized by the department. The proposed research will be managed through biweekly meetings with the supervisor to ensure full coherence between the research planned and the general objectives of the department. The researcher will work in a highly collaborative environment, with tight links with other researchers in the Atmospheric Composition group and other members of the department, including ocean biogeochemistry modelers. In this context, the applicant will be encouraged to participate in discussions and meetings involving several funded projects related to the fellow´s work, including the Spanish ministry grant entitled BIOTA (Ocean BIOgeochemistry response To refined Atmospheric iron inputs in present and future climate) led by the supervisors, and other core projects of the group focusing on dust and climate research, e.g., the AXA Chair on Sand and Dust Storms or the ERC Consolidator Grant entitled FRAGMENT (FRontiers in dust minerAloGical coMposition and its Effects upoN climaTe). Female candidates are especially encouraged to apply.

Key Duties

• Develop model components related to natural and anthropogenic sources of iron in Earth System models.
• Design model experiments and run them in HPC systems.
• Gather observations and evaluate model experiments.
• Develop original research and analysis strategies.
• Participate in collaborative projects with partner institutions.
• Present results at international meetings.
• Publish results in high-impact peer-reviewed journals.

Contribute ideas for new research projects.

Other duties include contributing to the development of common analysis tools; assisting in grant applications; and other duties as assigned.

Solucions tecnològiques per a la detecció de vivendes turístiques no registrades

La Conselleria d’Innovació, Indústria, Comerç i Turisme, que dirigix Nuria Montes, ha obert ja el termini perquè l’ecosistema innovador desenrotlle solucions que permeten detectar l’oferta de vivendes turístiques sense registrar a la Comunitat Valenciana. Les startups, empreses i entitats interessades disposaran fins al pròxim 13 de setembre per a inscriure i presentar les propostes tecnològiques. L’objectiu de la iniciativa és millorar significativament el procés d’identificació, seguiment i control de les vivendes d’ús turístic (VUT) no autoritzades, i està promoguda per la Direcció General d’Innovació (en el marc del projecte Tech FabLab Comunitat Valenciana) en col·laboració amb la Direcció General de Turisme. Esta crida pública es dirigix tant a startups, empreses i entitats de la Comunitat Valenciana, com d’Aragó, Cantàbria, Catalunya, Navarra i La Rioja, que són les comunitats autònomes participants en el projecte Tech FabLab.

Algorrritmes UPC - Les matemàtiques, aliades inesperades en la lluita contra les malalties

Des de fa anys, els investigadors i investigadores del grup de recerca en Biologia Computacional i Sistemes Complexos (BIOCOM-UPC) apliquen models matemàtics per entendre el comportament de les malalties infeccioses. Però la pandèmia per COVID-19 els va portar, gairebé d’un dia per l’altre, als titulars de diaris i d’informatiu. Amb ells i elles, moltes persones van descobrir com les matemàtiques podien ajudar les autoritats sanitàries a prendre decisions en els moments més complicats. També van fer que incorporéssim noves paraules al nostre vocabulari: risc de rebot, velocitat de contagi, la famosa RT… Però, què hi ha al darrere de tots aquests conceptes? Com funcionen aquests models? Com han viscut aquests darrers dos anys?

En el nou pòdcast 'Algorrritmes UPC', les investigadores Clara Prats i Aida Perramon responen a aquestes preguntes i reflexionen sobre com van passar d’una recerca reflexiva i discreta a dur a terme una tasca trepidant que requeria una capacitat d’adaptació constant a noves dades, coneixements i, sobretot, necessitats. També expliquen tots aquells projectes que ara, al BIOCOM-UPC, han pogut reprendre, no només vinculats a la COVID-19, sinó també a altres malalties infeccioses com la tuberculosi, la malària o la malaltia de Chagas, malalties de les quals gairebé no se’n parla, malgrat que afecten centenars de milions de persones i causen milions de morts cada any. Projectes tan apassionants com, per exemple, el desenvolupament d’un pulmó virtual que permet entendre la dinàmica de les lesions dins dels pulmons a causa de les infeccions per tuberculosi o com s'ha dissenyat un sistema 'low-cost' de diagnòstic de la malària basat en la intel·ligència artificial.
