Internship: Innovative methods to communicate the impacts of climate change on health per al Barcelona Supercomputing Center

Despite the increasing awareness of climate change impacts on health, our ability to quantify the extent to which climate change is responsible for worsening health outcomes remains limited. Health impact attribution can provide essential input into policy-making processes by quantifying the climate change related health burden and causally linking greenhouse gas emissions to observed health outcomes.

This internship proposes:

The review of innovative methods and practices for communicating and visualising the impacts of climate change on health (e.g. solution-oriented and positive storytelling, serious games, data visualisation tools, short-form videos) to raise awareness of the impact of climate events on health, therefore integrating science to policy and society.

After this initial review, the intern will provide recommendations for the co-development of health-impact stories together with stakeholders from different geographical regions (Andes, Mediterranean, Southern Africa). The co-developed impact stories will serve the dual purpose of disseminating the information generated in the projects TACTIC (Health impact toolkit for climate change attribution) and TerraDT (Digital twin of Earth system for cryosphere, land surface and related interactions), and engaging with more general audiences, making the impacts of climate change more tangible. These stories will eventually be integrated in a health impact toolkit for climate change attribution and on the digital twin for climate change adaptation platform.

About the group:

The intern will join the Earth System Services Group (ESS) at the Earth Sciences Department, conducting interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary research to enhance the societal value of climate prediction services, atmospheric composition and weather forecasting. The group actively engages with society, decision-makers, and businesses to enhance knowledge exchange and technology transfer while improving resilience by accelerating adaptation to a rapidly changing environment.

Key Duties

  • Conduct a review of innovative methods and practices for communicating and visualising the impacts of climate change on health
  • Provide recommendations for the co-development of health-impact stories with stakeholders from different geographical regions, encompassing different health impacts and climate hazards
  • Co-develop impact stories for disseminating information on health-impact attribution and engaging with more general audiences, making the impacts of climate change more tangible
