Glass filter media, particularly recycled glass, has shown significant advantages over traditional filter materials such as silica sand in various sectors, including swimming pool filtration. Now, we are extending this challenge to explore its potential in industrial applications, aiming to demonstrate its efficacy in reducing maintenance, increasing filtration performance, and promoting environmental sustainability.
PROBLEM STATEMENT:
While traditional filter materials like silica sand and anthracite are widely used in water filtration systems, they present certain limitations, including frequent maintenance, shorter life span, and higher resource consumption (e.g., water, energy, and chemicals). Glass filter media, with its unique properties, offers a more sustainable and efficient alternative. This challenge seeks to prove through empirical trials and testing that glass media can not only replace but outperform these traditional materials in industrial applications.
CHALLENGE OBJECTIVES:
Performance Testing: Conduct trials to measure and compare the filtration efficiency of glass media versus traditional filter materials, focusing on parameters such as water clarity, filtration speed, and particle retention.
Sustainability Impact: Analyze the environmental benefits, including reduced water and energy consumption during backwashing and lower chemical usage.
Durability Assessment: Evaluate the longevity of glass media, particularly its resistance to compaction and degradation over time, and its potential for cost savings due to lower maintenance and replacement needs.
Cross-sector Application: Demonstrate the versatility of glass filter media across various industrial water treatment processes, potentially replacing multiple layers of sand, anthracite, and garnet.
