Postdoctoral Researcher: Enhancing and exploiting the value of earth system services (R2) per el Barcelona Supercomputing Center
The Earth System Services Group (ESS) at the Earth Sciences Department conducts interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary research to enhance the societal value of environmental information, climate prediction and air quality services. The group actively engages with society, decision-makers, and businesses to exchange knowledge and develop user-oriented services. The aim of the ESS is to enhance knowledge and technology integration and improve resilience, by accelerating adaptation to a rapidly changing environment.
The ESS group’s Knowledge Integration Team is looking for a motivated researcher from any nationality to join our team and further our work on understanding the value of earth system services, and their co-evaluation, impact assessment and exploitation. Developing and applying qualitative, quantitative and mixed-methods approaches, the successful candidate will contribute to and enhance our emerging knowledge, practices and products (services) that aim at supporting resilience and climate change adaptation and mitigation in urban environments. To conduct such activities, the new team member will be expected to undertake knowledge co-production processes involving various stakeholders and users of earth system information to co-create and co-evaluate new knowledge and services. Using new approaches that reflect the different types of value climate and air quality services provide (economic, social, ecological, cultural etc.), the successful candidate will design strategies (such as exploitation plans) that assure the societal, scientific, or business use of the new knowledge and services generated in our ongoing and future research projects. The tasks will involve close collaboration with climate, air quality, social, and impact scientists and communication experts within ESS, Earth Sciences Department, and our project partners.
The successful candidate will be expected to learn about and participate in ESS’s ongoing international scientific work and contribute to new proposals. We are looking for a candidate who is a team player and will form an active part of our collaborative, diverse, interdisciplinary, and international team of scientists, communication specialists and technical experts. The successful candidate will benefit from expert training and a range of BSC-CNS staff benefits.
Key Duties

- Analyse climate change impacts by integrating social, ecological, and technological dimensions of urban systems.
- Actively engage with stakeholders from urban and other sectors to support the co-production of climate knowledge and climate services and their co-evaluation and exploitation within EU funded projects (e.g., Impetus4Change, Climateurope2).
- Coordinate with other research and practitioner projects and initiatives to exchange knowledge and organize dissemination and user-engagement activities and events.
- Engage with the non-academic stakeholders, including the public sector, private sector and society at large to ensure the dissemination and exploitation of new environmental knowledge and services.
- Participate in project meetings, and contribute to project reporting, and the preparation of scientific publications.
