PhD:Ultrafast Laser Microfabrication of photonic Structures in Laser Crystals per el EMAS Research group

The candidate will learn the fundamentals of direct laser microfabrication with ultrafast femtosecond laser pulses, with the aim of fabricating photonic structures and devices such as waveguides, diffraction gratings or photonic crystals inside technologically relevant materials such as infrared transparent glasses and crystals. Applications of the techonology range from optical sensing devices to optofluidic chips or astrophotonic chips, all of them applications related with modern technologies associated with a wide variety of fields like medicine, security, environmental sciences or astronomy. The PhD student will first acquire a strong experimental knowledge of the laser microfabrication technique in order to embarque in the design and fabrication of a laboratory scale prototype of a novel photonic on-chip device. The exact device will be decided depending on the student skills and preferance of final application.
A Bachelor and M.Sc. degree in related sciences.
A Bachelor average mark ≥ 3
Good knowledge of the English language is required.
Duration: maximum of 36 moths.
Beginning: 1 September 2014.
Salary: the gross monthly salary for the PhD position ranges from € 1.100,- gross per month in the first year increasing every year up to € 1.300,- gross per month in the two last years.

The average mark is calculated dividing the total number of points by the total number of credits. The number of point is calculated using the Spanish equivalence (grade on a scale of 10): 5-7/10 = 1 point; 7-8.5/10 = 2 points; 8.5-9.9/10 = 3 points; 10/10 = 4 points.
