IT Network and Security Engineer IT Department per al ICN2

The Catalan Institute of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology, Institut Català de Nanociència i Nanotecnologia, ICN2 (www.icn2.cat), is a non-profit research institute, which works concurrently in Scientific Research (Nanoscience, primarily via European and national collaborative projects) and Technology Research (Nanotechnology, in areas of internal expertise and co-development with private industry). 

The ICN2 has been growing quickly, based on its strong success rate in attaining competitive grants at both national and EU levels, and is now seeking an IT Network and Security Engineer to join the IT Department. The post will also have a strong development and support component in the IT Systems Engineering and End-User Support areas. 

This is a dual-role position: We are looking for a networking, telecommunications and security expert with a solid systems engineering background. You will be the IT Department’s Network Engineering area focal point, but also able to provide support in other IT specialties, mainly Systems Engineering and End-User Support. 

Ideally you will come from a managed services or service provider background, with a number of project rollouts under your belt across different environments. You will also have outstanding communications skills with a strong customer service focus. 

Tasks and responsibilities: 

The post holder is responsible for the third-level IT technical support and development of the following areas within the IT Department: 


  • IT network and telecommunications engineering, including but not limited to topologies design, cabling, switching, routing, wireless, landline and mobile voice and data transmissions. 
  • IT network security, including but not limited to network access control, firewalling, perimeter security, intrusion detection/protection, traffic filtering, antivirus, antispam and data leak prevention. 
  • IT systems engineering, including but not limited to infrastructure design, maintenance and support of servers, storage systems, operating systems, network services and applications. 
  • Managing and implementing projects assigned by the IT Director, ensuring that these are kept within the timescales and budgets agreed, as well as guaranteeing the quality of deliverables. 
  • Assisting second and first line IT support staff in providing an efficient, effective and timely IT technical support to end-users, ensuring the service's quality according to policies, procedures and service level agreements. 
  • Within the post's remit, supporting the IT Director in the development and definition of the ICN2's IT strategy.
