PhD at the Phononic and Photonic Nanostructures group per a ICN2

Employer: Institut Català de Nanociència i Nanotecnologia (ICN2)
Location: Campus de la UAB, Edifici ICN2 - 08193 Bellaterra (Barcelona), Spain
Job Type: Full time

The Catalan Institute of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology (ICN2) is a private foundation created on 11 July 2003 with the objective of becoming a world-renowned centre for nanoscience and nanotechnology research. It is part of CERCA, the network of Research Centres launched by the Catalan Government as a cornerstone of its long-term strategy to foster development of a knowledge-based economy. ICN2's research lines focus on the newly discovered physical and chemical properties that arise from the fascinating behaviour of matter at the nanoscale.

Job description:

We seek a candidate to be employed as a PhD student within the ICN2 Phononic and Photonic Nanostructures group. The PhD candidate will be working on comprehensive thermal measurements by thermal SPM-based techniques (quantitative thermal characterization at the nanoscale), known as “Scanning Thermal Microscopy” (SThM), which is based on the exchange of thermal energy between a nanotip and a surface with dedicated nanoprobes. The candidate will also be involved in the fabrication of samples by direct self-assembly of block copolymers and block copolymer nanocomposites The PhD candidate will be working within the ICN2 Phononic and Photonic Nanostructures group (http://www.icn.cat/~p2n/). The thesis involves areas ranging from the physics of heat transport, instrumentation and metrology, nanofabrication to material science.

The candidate should have a BSc´s and Master’s degree in Physics, Material Science, Engineering or relevant studies. Excellent communication skills are essential while English language is a prerequisite. This fixed term three-year position is funded through the EU project. Start date will be preferably the 2nd of October 2013, interviews will be held between the 2nd and 6th September.
