Open PhD position SEAT/UPC in finite element modeling of material failure under impact

L'Adriana Clivillé m'envia aquesta oferta

We are looking for a PhD candidate to be recruited in an industrially oriented research program jointly offered by Universitat
Politècnica de Catalunya-BarcelonaTech and SEAT Technical

The three-year PhD fellowship covers the full tuition, a monthly stipend,
and health insurance. The Ph.D. student will be contracted by the
company Rücker-Lypsa in the name of SEAT.

High-performance materials used in current car designs can become
more brittle, and present localized failure in crash tests. The project
aims at modeling and better understanding these phenomena, thus
enabling lighter and safer cars. The topic of research is in finite element
modeling of material behavior under impact conditions, including crack
propagation and failure at welds.

Applicants should hold a Master degree in Engineering, Mathematics,
Physics or a related field. They will be evaluated on the basis of their
academic record and credentials, previous experience in engineering
applied research if any, English proficiency, and their previous exposure
to any of the following topics:

  • applied mathematics and physics
  • modeling of mechanics of materials
  • finite element method

Applicants are expected to have strong programming and
communication skills, must be creative and have critical thinking ability.
Background in German is desirable.

Applications should be sent by e-mail - Ref. SEAT/UPC - to Irene Arias
(Irene.arias@upc.edu) and include a complete CV, with the names and
contact information of up to three referees, a short statement of purpose
(max one page), and a copy of the academic records (transcripts).

Applications received before 11 June 2013 will receive full
consideration (early application is recommended).
